Local law enforcement urge caution on roads ahead of July 4th weekend
MARYLAND – July 4th travel is expected to be the busiest yet.
A record 72.2 million people are projected to travel 50 miles or more from home over the Independence Day holiday period and 61.6 million will be traveling by car.
“As always we recommend that people either leave early or leave later and try to avoid the peak times, but if people do want to leave during the day, we just encourage everyone to be patient and drive responsibly,” said Lt. Timothy Corbin, Commander of the Salisbury Barrack for Maryland State Police.
Lt. Corbin said MSP will have extra troopers out on the road, trying to crack down on aggressive and impaired driving.
“We see a lot of aggressive and reckless driving when there are traffic backups and people tend to increase dangerous driving behaviors and they end up getting a lot of citations for those,” he said.
The Salisbury Police Department will also be stepping up patrols this holiday weekend.
“Law enforcement agencies across the region will have patrols that, there’s going to be extra numbers of police officers on the road just for safety overall,” said Cpt. Ryan Koerner with the Salisbury Police Department. “There will also be DUI and impaired enforcement.”
Cpt. Koerner with the Salisbury Police Department urges people to use their head when traveling during the July 4th weekend.
“If you’re going to be traveling make sure your setting up enough time to get to your destination because of the increased traffic, make sure you have a sober driver if you plan on enjoying some libations during the weekend, and we ask the community just use common sense,” he said.
Between this June 28th and July 6th – about 1 point 3 million more people are expected to travel – compared to last year.
