Local camp hosts summer play on July 19th
LAUREL, Del. – Summer camps are in full swing, and this weekend one local camp, Delmarva Christian Service Camp, is hosting Mad Week. Organizers hope community members come out to support the event.
Chris Maddox, the camp director, said this week is one of the biggest of the summer.
“The week we’re in is called Mad Week, which stands for music, arts and drama, and we’ve been doing this program for about 27 years,” he said. “We basically put on a full-length performance and do everything that goes with that — all in one week.”
Campers are preparing for Saturday, July 19th. Delmarva Christian Service Camp has been operating for 50 years. The 33-acre property offers activities such as swimming, basketball and campfires.
Kate Cunningham, who has attended the camp since age 5, said this week is her favorite.
“We all just joke around and laugh, but we work hard, especially during Mad Week, and that just brings a close connection between all of us,” she said.
The event will take place at the pavilion facility and is free to attend. One of Maddox’s favorite things is seeing the growth of campers over time.
“I grew up here, and now I get to see a lot of kids whose parents I went to camp with — and now their kids are coming up in the program,” he said. “That’s what’s neat about it — just being able to see that generational growth.”
The play will begin at 4:30 p.m. at 15526 English Ivy Lane.
