Future Wicomico Library Unveils New Design Plans That Inspire Community

SALISBURY, Md. – The future Wicomico Public Library kicked off its campaign Tuesday, unveiling the design for its new facility.

Executive Director Seth Hershberger said the new library will be one of the most beautiful in Maryland.

“I mean, a waterfront library that really captures the beauty of the Eastern Shore,” Hershberger said. “This place is going to be very evocative of our home and our community, and it belongs to all of us.”

Wicomico County Council President John Cannon called it an exciting moment.

“It’s finally going to come to fruition, all the hard work that we’ve done, not only in the county but on the state level as well,” Cannon said. “We have so many different partners who are coming together at one time to acknowledge the fact that this is going to be probably one of the best libraries in the state of Maryland.”

Hershberger believes the new facility will be a draw for all residents.

“For everybody across all parts of Wicomico who are driving into their library, this makes it much more accessible for families with children, seniors and just everybody across the county to come to their library,” he said.

As the designs were unveiled, Cannon thanked those who made the project possible.

“Tonight’s also a process whereby we can thank the many benefactors in the community,” Cannon said. “It took a lot of people who all came together to help make this happen.”

Hershberger said community feedback is critical as the project moves forward.

“We wanted to preserve some of the interesting architectural features that are already here because this is a great space,” he said. “But obviously we had to change some things and open it up. A lot of it is just creating larger spaces and those really unique areas like children’s areas and teen areas within the library.”

There was a strong turnout at the event, with many residents expressing excitement for the new library.

Hershberger said the hope is to open the library in 2027.
