Dorchester Health Dept. & Local Sorority Holding “Fan”-Tastic Drive

(CAMBRIDGE, Md) – While we may be done with June’s heat wave, here at the Dorchester County Health Department, they’re trying to make sure some of the more vulnerable members of the community are prepared for the rest of the summer.

Tavonya Chester, on behalf of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and the Health Department are asking the community to donate fans and air conditioners for vulnerable community members.

“We have just gotten into Summer, we’re only three weeks in the Summer, we still have August to go with the high weather conditions,” says Chester.

So far, about two dozen fans have been donated.

While the Health Department did offer up cooling centers in last month’s heat wave, they were only open during the day and only a temporary solution.

Tavonya tells us, “And we know that air conditioners are very expensive. We know that some people don’t even have the money to purchase a fan. So it is important I you find it in your heart to wan to help save somebody’s life.”

With the worst of the summer season potentially still ahead of us, health officials are treating this as a potential life or death situation.

Hannah Mayhew with the Health Department says, “There’s people that are going to the hospital or dying from the heat around here. So it’s really important. It’s sort of an invisible killer, because people are impacted.”

If you’re interested in donating a fan, an air conditioner, or $25, you can call the Dorchester County Health department at (410)-228-3223.
