Diet Foodie Friday: Delaware State Fair
HARRINGTON, Del. – Foodie Friday came to the Delaware State Fair, and this time, it’s bringing you the diet side. the diet version. We went all over to find the best dairy-free, vegan, and gluten-free treats to eat!
Quest for the Best
From gluten-free Greek salads to dairy-free desserts, I foraged the fair in my quest to find the best. Vegan vendors can be hard to find, but I was able to find plenty of diet-friendly treats in this heat.
Treats in the Heat
For the southern crowd like me, try the Peach Cobblers or pies at Apple Desserts. If you’re a northeastern gal and a bit homesick, maybe you’d like a pretzel from Two Bay Twist?
And for those local country folk on the shore, they had A trio of corn! You could get it in a cup, on the cob, even by kettle, at Henry’s Kettle Corn.
K & R Concessions
I chose to have my corn in chip form after stopping by K & R Concessions. They serve breakfast and lunch and have vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options. Concessionaire Megan Van Meter says when it comes to food, you either go big, or go home!
“My favorite reaction is when we create the loaded nachos or taco salad, and they can’t always see when we’re building it, and when I set it up on the counter, the looks on their faces the eyes get really big like wow, that’s a lot of food, yes, it is… We want all of our customers to feel included. We want them to feel welcome, and we want them to know they can come here and get a heck of a good meal.”
Loaded Vegetarian Nachos
They start off with homemade gluten free corn chips, then they go through their satisfying sequence: refried beans, nacho cheese, lettuce, Pico de Gallo, sour cream, guacamole, and lastly topped with pickled jalapenos.
I’d have to say, she wasn’t lying. I tried it myself. “Gluten free chips- delicious, Guacamole- “the bomb”, Pico- on point! Baby if somebody told you, you’d be lacking because you needed to have a vegetarian or gluten free nacho they lied to you!… They gave me two forks, I know it’s big enough to share, but I might end up eating this all by myself… Bottom line, these veggie nachos are bussing! Yummy!”
Tropical Delights
And what better way to end a hot day than to stop by Tropical Delights: The Original Pineapple Guys, and get a treat that everyone can eat? The organic Vegan Pineapple soft serve was just the thing I needed! “See, now even restrictions can be refreshing.”
