Delmar takes down North East, advances in MD softball state tournament
POCOMOKE CITY, Md. – Delmar topped North East 8-1 to advance in the Maryland State Little League Majors tournament at Pocomoke Little League on Tuesday.
Delmar struck first, scoring in the top of the first inning and leading 1-0 until North East equalized at 1-1 in the bottom of the second.
Delmar’s immediate response in the top of the third proved pivotal in the game, scoring five runs to build a 6-1 lead.
After a lightning delay, Delmar came right back and tacked on another run in the top of the fourth to make it 7-1, then another in the fifth to cement their lead at 8-1.
After the game, Head Coach Dustin Shiles praised his team’s performance, especially their focus through the 30+ minute weather delay, saying, “I think they did great, we stayed in the game, they had some down time. They really were pumped up, they stayed focused, and when the game started back up they jumped right back in. Even though this is a young group for this age, this is a veteran group, and they’re just awesome to coach.”
Coach Shiles explained what his team will need to do to make a run at a state championship: “Just got to keep hitting the ball like we did tonight and playing good defense. We’ve got a great pitcher on the mound, we’ve got to back her up with defense and put some runs on the board and we’ll be just fine.”
Delmar will play Hancock at 6pm on Thursday, July 10, on field #3 at Pocomoke Little League.
