Delaware State Fair returns this week

HARRINGTON, Del. — The Delaware State Fair returns to the Harrington Campgrounds July 17-26.

Sydney Stump, of the Delaware State Fair marketing team, said it’s one of the most anticipated events.

“It’s always exciting, there is so much happening, there is always moving pieces. We got vendors moving in, we got grounds moving in. Our 3 days of setup is just go-go-go,” Stump said.

The fair will feature a variety of attractions like carnival rides, live entertainment, and agricultural exhibits. However, one of the biggest draws is the carnival food.

Margaret Alvey, who works with vendor Chester Gators and Tators, was already getting ready for the event. “We do a deep cleaning, as we do at each fair, and at the beginning of each fair,” she said.

And she wasn’t the only person setting up; Shanda Barnes was in the Marketplace tent getting her clothing business ready. She runs the Southern Glam Boutique, which she brings from Florida to the fairgrounds every year.

“I look forward to the community every year,” Barnes said. “It’s totally different from a lot of states I’ve been to, the people are really nice, and really open. ‘It’s packed, it’s always packed. Maybe a couple thousand, I’d say. It’s really packed.’

Stump believes there’s nothing like it. “I mean this is a long-standing tradition. This is over 100 years of just families being out here; sometimes you see people out here once a year, and this is where you see them,” she said.
