Delaware: 13 Recreational Marijuana Dispensaries Open August 1st
Georgetown, Del. – Best Buds is one of 13 dispensaries offering recreational marijuana products that will open Aug. 1.
Joshua Sanderlin, Delaware’s marijuana commissioner, said, “For recreational use, beginning on Aug. 1, anyone over the age of 21 with a valid ID can go into any of the dispensaries that will be converting over at the time. There is no requirement to get a card.”
Thirteen dispensaries, from Georgetown to Wilmington, will open at the beginning of August.
Sanderlin said, “It’s all about access. It’s about creating access for adults over the age of 21 while preserving our medical program as well and ensuring those with a need can obtain cannabis medically as well as recreationally.”
He added that there are benefits to having a medical card: customers can skip the store line and enjoy lower taxes. Being able to buy recreational marijuana is something many Delawareans have anticipated for years. Savannah, from Wilmington, is one of them.
“A lot of people have mental health issues, and it helps with anxiety, helps cancer patients, and helps with other health problems,” she said.
Looking ahead, Sanderlin said regulating recreational marijuana keeps users safer and holds providers accountable.
“We’re just committed to ensuring the sustainability of the industry, ensuring the social equity of the industry, getting new licenses out to create a better product stream for the consumer as well as the patient,” he said.
Delaware Gov. Matt Meyer also celebrated the new steps, saying in a statement in part: “This revenue also gives us a powerful tool to invest in the communities most impacted by the war on drugs, addressing past wrongs and ensuring that the benefits of this new market reach every corner of our state.”
