Beach Advisories for Wicomico and Somerset Counties

MARYLAND – Advisories have been posted within the past week, alerting residents about possible beach contamination.

It’s the summertime, and while you and your family go out to splash in the waters or play in the sand, the last thing you want to be worried about is bacteria on the Beach!

Tyaskin Beach

The Wicomico Health Department posted an advisory last week due to elevated bacteria levels at Tyaskin Beach. Infections of the ear, nose, or eye, diarrhea, vomiting, hepatitis, encephalitis, skin rashes, and respiratory illnesses are all symptoms of exposure to bacteria, viruses, and parasites in contaminated water

Officials wanted to make sure to put out a warning to all those who enjoy the Beach. “Children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with a weakened immune system are most likely to get sick or seriously ill from swimming in contaminated water.”

July 18th, officials did test the water, and it is safe. For questions, residents may call Wicomico County’s Department of Environmental Health at (410) 546- 4446 or visit their website.

Wellington Beach

We’ve moved from Wicomico County to Somerset County, where there is another Advisory for Wellington Beach, located in Crisfield, Maryland.

Now they too have found elevated bacteria levels, and say you can reduce your risk of getting sick by following these tips:

● Pay attention to contamination signs and advisory warnings and stay out of polluted water

● Avoid swimming at beaches after heavy rainfall

● Stay out of murky or foul-smelling water.

● Avoid beach water if you have an open wound or infection

● Swim without putting your head under water

The beach will be retested on today July 21, 2025, with results expected by Wednesday July 23 and say they will inform the public when the levels are back to normal. For questions, residents may call the Department of Environmental Health’s on call phone at 443-859-4419.
