18-year-old swimmer dies at Assateague Island National Seashore
BERLIN, Md. – An 18-year-old swimmer has died after being pulled from the water unconscious Thursday afternoon, officials said.
Lifeguards were alerted that two swimmers were in distress south of the Chincoteague Beach parking lot. One of the swimmers was rescued, but the other was found unresponsive and brought to shore.
Despite CPR efforts, he was pronounced dead at a hospital.
The incident occurred about 150 yards outside the lifeguarded area.
Officials are urging beachgoers to stay close to shore and be aware of wind and current conditions.
