Zoo animals beat the heat

Salisbury, Md. — It was another hot day on the Eastern Shore, and officials at the Salisbury Zoo said many of the animals were born and raised there and have since acclimated to the weather.

The bison at the zoo, one of the many animals at the zoo that are attempting to keep cool. “Well, the bison, they actually have two coats. So they have a summer coat and a winter coat. So if you come out right now, you’re going to see what kind of looks like they’re shedding,” said Luke Krider with the Salisbury Zoo.

Local resident Sage Widney weathered the heat to visit. “I just thought, because the animals are out today, it’s super cute to see them playing in the water. It’s definitely worth being out in the heat,” she said.

The animals appeared to be on their normal schedule, though there were fewer visitors due to the heat. Widney believes the animals are in good hands. “I know the zoo is doing its best to keep them cool. I’ve seen staff walking around, keeping an eye on the animals,” she said.

Zoo officials also advised pet owners to keep an eye on their animals at home, particularly outdoor cats and dogs. They recommended making sure pets are not overheating and avoiding walks on blacktop, which can burn their paws.
