Wor Wic Cuts the Ribbon on new Cyber Range

SALISBURY, Md. – Wor-Wic Community College is unveiling a new facility as part of a Maryland program.

It’s known as a Cyber Range, and Wor Wic students will be able to learn the ins and outs of cybersecurity, with the goal of filling tens of thousands of job openings.

“These ranges allow for students to really get a hands on experiential learning, opportunity to actually deal with cyber threats in a secure environment. What we have here is the first in the nation sort of cyber range is dedicated for workforce,” says Executive Director of the Maryland Association of Community Colleges, Brad Phillips.

Ben Davis is a computer sciences instructor at Wor Wic, and he gave us a rundown of how Cyber Range is able to prepare students for careers in cybersecurity…

From identifying to preventing cyberattacks.

Davis tells us, “This is real virtual hardware students can get their hands on and get real world experience using. We can create attacks, students can misconfigure things and learn how to configure things correctly. So it allows students to do a wide variety of tasks learning how to be a cyber warrior.”

And Wor Wic College President, Dr. Deb Casey says that as technology is more vital to our day to day lives, our need for cybersecurity becomes equally important.

“You could work at a food bank, you could work at a local hospital. You could work in a business or industry. And everybody is under the potential for a cyber attack. So having a cyber hub on campus where students can do training and learn more about how to prevent these attacks from happening and help employers so they’re never caught in those situations is a pretty important opportunity here at the college,” says Dr. Casey.

Wor-Wic is still in the process of implementing the Cyber Range, but they’re looking forward to students enrolling in the program
