Weather Tidbits: Tornado Safety

This edition of Weather Tidbits will be discussing the safest places to be during a tornado warning. Firstly, a dangerous place to be is a mobile home. If you live in a mobile home, make sure you have a pre-established plan to go to a site-built building the next time there is a tornado warning. Within a site-built house, the safest place to be is in an underground basement. If you do not have one, the next best option is to be on the lowest floor and near the center of the house, away from windows. Be in a small room like a bathroom or an interior closet. To protect yourself from potential debris in case the house gets damaged, cover yourself with blankets or a mattress. Also, it’s recommended to wear a bicycle helmet to prevent blunt force trauma. Wait until the tornado warning expires before leaving your spot.
