UPDATE: Wicomico Landfill Press Conference

WICOMICO COUNTY, Md. – Wicomico County Executive Julie Giordano and Newland Park Landfill Acting Superintendent Adam Corey have proposed limited hours at the waste facility to combat growing problems. On Monday morning, Giordano issued a warning about the situation.

“If we don’t do these necessary steps, the entire landfill is going to close, whether they’re county residents or city residents. And when that space is filled with cell seven is not done, that landfill closes. And I’m saying it on record. The landfill will close until cell seven is open. So we are at a very we’re at a very extreme thing right now,” Giordano said.

The pair made their case that the county should also follow the state’s refuse disposal permit rules, banning commercial haulers from outside Wicomico County.

“The legislation that the County Council is entertaining tomorrow night violates our state permit. We do not want to be in conflict with the Maryland department environment, especially when they are working with us very, very diligently right now to ensure that we get cell number seven open, hopefully by no later than May of 2026, so that we do not have to go into a crisis situation where we are shutting down our landfill.” Corey said.

In an effort to avoid that crisis point, Corey said landfill officials are working to expand into Cell 7, which is a neighboring plot of land. But until then, Giordano said commercial haulers from over county lines have no place in Wicomico.

“They will not have a path forward in Wicomico County to be able to bring out of county trash, period” Giordano said.
