State Champion student athletes graduate from Cape Henlopen High School

LEWES, Del. – Cape Henlopen High School said goodbye to their class of 2025 on Tuesday. The Vikings senior class–along with faculty, family, and friends–gathered at Legends stadium for a commencement ceremony honoring the school’s 56th graduating class.

The Vikings athletic teams brought home multiple state championships this spring, and the graduation ceremony saw many of those champion student-athletes walk across the stage. Among them was Cape baseball’s Trey Hitchcock, an outfielder who helped his team claim its third state title in eight years with a big hit and a run scored in the championship game.

Hitchcock talked about what it was like finishing his high school career right after winning a championship, and what he’ll remember most, saying, “I always visualize at night, and this is part of it. I always visualized winning a state championship and coming out here and graduating…Honestly that dogpile at the end of the game, our coach always talked about it with the 2018 and 2022 teams, and that dogpile, to experience it firsthand, it was amazing. So that’s definitely a key moment.”

Another one of those athletes was Macy Steinwedel of Cape girl’s lacrosse.

The senior viking lead her team with 62 goals, adding 16 assists for a total of 78 points in her senior campaign. Steinwedel was one of just four seniors on a Cape girl’s lacrosse team that defeated Tower Hill 20-9 to claim their second straight DIAA state championship.

Steinwedel who will be playing Division 1 lacrosse at Old Dominion University next year, talked about the experience of finishing her high school career just days after winning a state championship: “I’m just really excited because it’s been a long four years, I’m just ready to go on to my next venture…It feels awesome just to end out with a win and like all of our hard work we put through, all these years to end it off with a win. All the friends I’ve made and how much fun I’ve had, and all the memories I’ve made.”
