Shorebirds come from behind multiple times to open home stand with a victory
SALISBURY, Md. – The Delmarva Shorebirds beat the Salem Redsox 5-4 on Tuesday night to open up a six-game series with Boston’s Single-A affiliate.
Salem claimed the lead early, scoring a run on a double play in the top of the first.
The Shorebirds responded in the bottom of the third. With two on and two out, Elis Cuevas took the 8th pitch of his at-bat deep to right field for a three-run shot that put Delmarva ahead 3-1.
Salem would reclaim the lead in the top of the sixth with three runs of their own off of Shorebirds reliever Jack Crowder.
Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth, the Shorebirds would load the bases before recording an out. With the bases loaded, a Colin Tufts walk would bring home the tying run in Nate George. Then with one out, a Kevin Guerrero grounder plated Cuevas from third. That would prove to be the winning run, with Delmarva scoring tow runs in the bottom of the eighth to steal the first game of the series 5-4.
The second game of the series is slated for Wednesday at 7:05pm at Shorebirds Stadium.
