Richard Allen School Prepares for Juneteenth Celebration Saturday

(GEORGETOWN, Del) – The Richard Allen School is preparing for their annual Juneteenth parade through Georgetown on Saturday.

We spoke with members of the Richard Allen Coalition about this year’s event.

Paula Roberts, whose a Board Member with the Richard Allen Coalition tells us, “Each year we have this celebration, and I’m so excited that once again, we’re going to kick off in the center of Georgetown at 10 a.m. on Saturday near the Georgetown Circle. The parade will then take its route and come down Railroad Avenue to the schoolhouse.”

This weekend’s event marks the 10th year the Richard Allen School has put on a Juneteenth celebration; making it the oldest in Sussex County.

Richard Allen Secretary, Ivan Neal said in addition to the parade, the Richard Allen School is offering up something else on Saturday, a chance to learn.

Neal says, “…Giving people the access to coming in one place and here the history of the holiday, but also to get access to a variety of resources and programs and things like that.”

To many with the Richard Allen School, the Juneteenth parade also brings a sense of community.

Roberts says, “People come each year, they’re excited every summer to come back to the grounds here and just enjoy all the food and entertainment and just to see one another. You know, it’s a time of celebration, is a time to think a little bit about past history and just celebrate.”

The parade will start Saturday, June 21st at 10 A.M. and run through Downtown Georgetown to the Richard Allen School where the community celebration will begin at 11 A.M.
