Maryland Senate Scholarship helps local students stay near the shore

MARYLAND —  State Sen. Mary Beth Carozza calls this program one of her most important assignments.

“It really supports the whole notion of keeping our talent and our youth right here on the Shore,” Carozza said. “And I’m really encouraged that over the years, by building up the program, we’ve seen our numbers increase for students from this area attending three institutions of higher education right here in our three counties.”

Carozza represents three colleges in her district: Salisbury University, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, and Wor-Wic Community College.

“This year we have had the highest number of applicants at 134, which, when you think about it across the three counties, is an exceptionally high number … and of those 134 applicants, 126 scholarships have been awarded,” she said.

To be eligible for the Maryland Senate Scholarship, you must be a graduating senior and a state resident. Local students already enrolled in a Maryland college may also apply.

The senator is passionate about the program that invests in local students on the Shore.

“As far as the scholarship recipients attending those three Eastern Shore schools, that’s encouraging,” Carozza said. “That tells me that we are keeping our talent, our youth, right here on the Shore.”
