Library official gives update to Schumaker Pond project

WICOMICO COUNTY, Md. – Architects have been drawing up plans for what the new Wicomico County Public Library will look like, with hopes of having it open to the public in 2027.

Library director, Seth Hershberger said as of late, they’ve been speaking with stakeholders
who will help bring the building to life.

“We’re getting a lot of great support from the county and from the state, but without that community support, without that philanthropic giving, we wouldn’t be able to have the kind of world-class library that we are absolutely going to build there, on the shores of Schumaker Pond,” said Hershberger.

In total, the library will cost $13.8 million to build. Hershberger said $4.5 million of that needs to come from those stakeholders and community members who want to see the new addition in the county.

“It belongs to all of us. It’s our library and it’s going to impact our children for generations, not only as part of this library, as a really important asset to enrich the quality of life for all of us, but also an important economic driver, too, because people really care if they’re going to live in a place, that it has a great library,” said Hershberger.

The library is hosting an event on July 22nd at 4:30pm, at 909 South Schumaker Drive, where folks can see the proposed design and learn how to make contributions.
