ICE activity reported in Georgetown, Cambridge

DELMARVA – As the Trump Administration ramps up arrests of illegal migrants, ICE apprehensions are happening more in communities on Delmarva.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested an individual in Georgetown, Delaware yesterday and several individuals this morning in Cambridge, Maryland.

“For per deconfliction guidelines that we’ve established with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, they notified us that they had a subject that was wanted in our limits, they let us know that they were going to be in town, they came, executed their warrant, departed shortly after and that was pretty much it,” said Lt. Joel Diaz with the Georgetown Police Department.

According to Georgetown Police, ICE agents were actively seeking a subject with an outstanding criminal arrest warrant.

The subject was located and taken into custody without incident.

The Georgetown Police Department was not involved in the operation, but felt the need to let the community know about the arrest.

“We’ve had things in the past where it wasn’t officers from any agencies, just the community thought they saw a police car and we came out and investigated, so to avoid all that misinformation or the development of misinformation, they let us know when they are going to operate within our limits and we let the public know that this is what happened,” said Lt. Diaz.

Immigration Attorney Steven Planzer said he is not surprised by the arrests in Georgetown, Delaware and Cambridge, Maryland.

“I know that the Trump Administration has been ramping up arrests of people that have prior removal orders as well as arrested those incidental to those arrests,” said Planzer.

Planzer said people should try to resolve their immigration status legally to avoid getting arrested.

“It doesn’t have to be a fearful time, I always tell my clients please seek the competent counsel and help that you need, speak to someone who can give you advice again in reopening their case, getting their status changed,” he said.

The Cambridge Police Department put out a statement on Facebook Wednesday saying, “We have received several phone calls and inquiries regarding photos passed through social media showing subjects being detained/arrested within the city limits by law enforcement. The law enforcement in the pictures is not anyone associated with the Cambridge Police Department, and we have no knowledge of the incident(s) that took place.”

Meanwhile, Georgetown Police encourage the public to report any suspicious activity by calling 302-586-6613.

If you have concerns about someone being detained, you can search the Online Detainee Locator System.
