WICOMICO CO., Md. – An Eden woman has been sentenced to two decades in prison for hitting and killing a pedestrian in December 2023.

On December 4, 2023, 40-year-old Catherine Thornton was driving westbound on South Upper Ferry Road when she crossed into the eastbound lane, hitting and killing a pedestrian as he walked on the shoulder of the roadway with his girlfriend. The victim reportedly pushed his girlfriend out of the way before being hit, saving her life. Thornton then turned around and drove past the scene without stopping or helping, ignoring cries for help.

Witnesses called 911 and provided a description of the vehicle. Thornton tried to conceal her involvement, but investigators were able to collect evidence and witness statements proving that Thornton was the driver. She was reportedly under the influence of narcotics at the time of the crash.

Thornton was sentenced on Friday to 20 years, the maximum combined sentence, for grossly negligent vehicular manslaughter and failing to stop at the scene involving death. No part of her sentence was suspended.
