Dorchester Co. Helping People Beat the Heat

(CAMBRIDGE, Md) – Dorchester County officials are working to protect people from those extreme temperatures.

Recycling worker, Corzon Cummings told us about his experience with the heat, even for early in the day.

He says, “I got faint because of the humidity in the back of the truck, the trash truck and the smell of the continuous, you know, pressure of the heat and humidity rising. I got lightheaded. I started seeing stars and I felt like I wanted to faint…”

This is just one of many stories in Dorchester County as the heat index reached as high as 112 degrees in Cambridge by 2pm.

We met with Dorchester County EMS Paramedic, Julie Schuyler shortly after a call in regards to an elderly patient suffering from heat sickness.

She says they only expect more with the heat.

“On average within the past week, 3 to 4 a day. And the heat has not been as high as it is today and projected for the rest of the week. So we expect those calls to almost double,” says Schuyler.

Meanwhile, multiple places are opening up their doors as cooling centers across Cambridge to help underserved members of the community get out of the heat.

Shelly Houlihan with One Mission Cambridge tells us it’s, “…Extremely important, life threatening heat. And there is a great need for more places that are cooling shelter and offer shelter to people in this weather.”

Dorchester County EMS wants to remind people to keep themselves hydrated and not leave any children or animals in the car over the next few days.
