Delaware Office of Highway Safety “Sober Rides” program continues this July 4th

DELAWARE – The Delaware Office of Highway Safety is making sure people have a safe ride home this 4th of July.

The Delaware Office of Highway Safety is once again offering its Sober Rides program this 4th of July holiday.

“We know that people are going to celebrate the 4th of July and we actually want people to celebrate the 4th of July, we just don’t want them to drive impaired, so this gives people an option to make a smart safe choice to get home safely,” said Jeff Horvath, Deputy Director of the Delaware Office of Highway Safety.

The office will be offering ride-share vouchers of up to $20 for Lyft and Uber.

“Between 2020 and 2024 Delaware had 641 fatal crashes, 39% of those crashes were related to driving impaired either under the influence of alcohol or drugs, that’s 250 crashes that didn’t have to happen and 273 lives that were tragically lost,” said Jason Coleman, Traffic Safety Program Manager with the Delaware Office of Highway Safety.

The initiative aims to not only raise awareness for the public, but also to provide a solution to help take impaired drivers off the roads.

To date, the Sober Rides program has given 600 rides home to Delawareans.

“We try to hit the major holidays where drinking is more prevalent,” said Coleman. “We’ve done this for the Thanksgiving Eve holiday, New Year’s Eve, St. Patrick’s Day and now we’re continuing with the July 4th holiday.”

Going forward, officials hope to expand the program, adding holidays and increasing the amount of vouchers available.

“There’s no use of federal or state funds for this program, this is all donated by local businesses and organizations and partners to the Office of Highway Safety through sponsorship donations,” said Coleman.

Vouchers can be redeemed between noon on Friday, July 4th and 3:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 5th.

People can begin claiming their voucher codes as early as 8 a.m. on July 4th by visiting MySoberRides.com.
