Battling heat on the boardwalk

Dumser's Dairlyand on the boardwalk

Ocean City, Md– Today marks the hottest day of the year. Ocean City boardwalk workers shared how they are coping with that heat.

Somehow, the ice cream hasn’t melted at Dumser’s. Employee, Riley Smith said. “We’ve been taking turns, getting back in the walking and sitting in there for 5 minutes because it was way too hot. And we don’t have any A/C in here, so we’re dying.”

Fisher’s popcorn is the complete opposite. “We actually have the A/C on all the time,” said Erin Soriano, manager at Fisher’s Popcorn. “During the summertime, we have the AC on every day, but we break out like our floor fans and other stuff when we have an excessive heat warning.”

Soriano also said they have cooling systems inside and outside the corner shop. “We try to take care of our employees with with the heat in the air. So we get that all taken care of for them.” she added.

Soriano said they’re pushing hydration with their employees. “We’re doing water breaks when we need to. So they get like 10 minutes to just sit back in the AC and like drink water and Gatorade if they need to replenish on electrolytes.”

At Dumser’s, Smith shared a few ideas about how they could beat the extreme heat in the future.

“Maybe get some AC in here because you’re sweating even just like some bands that we can keep up here because it’s hot. Very hot.”
