Wicomico County Public Library provides resources for women struggling with motherhood

Mother's Day

WICOMICO COUNTY, Md. – Every second Sunday in May is Mother’s Day. And for many women including myself-, from time to time, may struggle a bit. Motherhood can sometimes become overwhelming and it’s always good to know there are resources around every corner.

Seamless vs Stressful

Womanhood to motherhood can be a seamless or stressful transition, and with the added pressures of society, it’s easy to become overwhelmed. Monica Buckley is the Wicomico County Library Circulation Manager and a mother of one. “Motherhood is very difficult, but it’s very rewarding as well. and just because it seems like you’re by yourself in the struggles, everybody is having these struggles.”

Monica says the journey changes every day. “It’s about the same amount of work; it just changes throughout the stages. So, it’s that it either harder or easier at each stage, what they need changes as they grow… It is the balance between what you need and what your child needs. So, being aware that your mental health is just as important as your child’s mental health.”

Rest & Relaxation

She says many times, women don’t take care of themselves, and that’s something that should be done every day, not just on Mother’s Day. “If you’re exhausted and you’re tired, and you know, you’re stressed out about money, about your house getting food on the table- as much as you try to shelter your child from that they’re still going to pick it up.”

She says even the youngest of kids pick up on energy. “So, developing a support system with family, friends, community to support you when you’re having a hard time, is as important for what you do for your child.”

Teens or Terrible Two’s

Whether you’re raising college kids, struggling with teens or the terrible twos, or even a new mom, the library has much to offer no matter where you are in your motherhood journey. “It is not a bad thing to ask for help. We are here at the library to provide information and provide resources for people to find the help they need.”

And to all the mothers out there, she says take it one day at a time. The library offers yoga classes every Wednesday from 4:30 pm – 5:30 pm, and if you’re interested in their other resources like the community support center, stop by or visit their website.
