The Wicomico County Board of Education host luncheon on state of school system

SALISBURY, Md. – The Wicomico County Board of Education hosted an event at the Civic Center for a luncheon. They did this in collaboration with the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce to talk about the state of the school system.

WCPS Superintendent Dr. Micah Stauffer said he enjoys doing this event. “We use this as an opportunity to share with the business leaders and community leaders about what’s going on in Wicomico County Public Schools.”

New school initiatives, Blueprint for Maryland’s Future, and fiscal year 2026 budget requests to the County were among the topics discussed at the luncheon.

The gathering, organized with the help of Chamber of Commerce President Bill Chambers, provided critical updates to community leaders.

“But more importantly, the quality of public education is paramount, and it’s important that the leaders of our county understand it’s a direct tie to economic development.”

Dr. Stauffer stated the school system is focusedBoardofedluncheon on student achievement, student engagement, and creating a high performing workforce.

He claims the direct approach helps make the school’s decisions more transparent.

“It’s crucial that we’re always transparent and communicate with our community, so that we always know what’s going on with our school system. One of the big things going right now is the increase in enrollment.”

The increase in enrollment is one reason WCPS asked for an increase in school funding above maintenance of effort.

Dr. Stauffer said he is happy that County Executive Julie Giordano fulfilled his requests, but it’s up to Wicomico County Council for final review.

“The county executive has put forward our request to accommodate things we’re seeing with the need of more teachers, so we can reduce our class sizes.”
