Rehoboth Beach Police happy about new AI camera that will keep community safe

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. – There is a new technology for Rehoboth Beach Police officials in hopes of enforcing rules.  The department recently installed a ‘Flock Safety’ license-plate reader.

The new hardware will use artificial-intelligence technology to identify the make, model, and color of cars. Lieutenant Mark Sweet said the system is in preparation for the high-traffic summer months.

“The technology is useful, because as we have an increase in volume, it becomes difficult to monitor at the same rate as the quiet months. It is an aid to us, but we will still be doing the job the old-fashioned way.”

The devices were installed last month; with the hope that the technology will enhance community safety. Rehoboth Beach is currently the only municipality in Sussex County using the technology. Lieutenant Sweet is happy the department is catching up with other areas. “We’ve seen this be successful in other jurisdictions, and we wanted to make sure we were keeping up with technologies that were useful in solving crime and criminal activity.”
