Public hearing held for Proposed Solar Facility in Somerset County

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – A public hearing held on Thursday at The Henson, UMES Hotel and Conference Center in Princess Anne provided local residents and interested parties an opportunity to comment on a proposal by Econox Renewables Inc. to construct a 2.04 MW solar generating facility in Somerset County. The hearing, presided over by Public Utility Law Judge Kristin Case Lawrence, was part of the Maryland Public Service Commission’s ongoing review of the project.

The proposed solar facility, intended as part of Maryland’s community solar program, would be built on approximately 11 acres of a 60-acre property located at 29715-29899 Deal Island Road in Princess Anne. The development is part of the state’s efforts to increase access to renewable energy and help meet clean energy goals across the region.

Econox Renewables, which filed for a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity (CPCN) with the Maryland Public Service Commission in September 2024, is seeking approval to begin construction. The CPCN is required for any new energy-generating facilities in the state.

During the hearing, several community members voiced their support for the project, noting the potential benefits of clean, locally generated solar power. Others raised concerns about the environmental impact, traffic, and potential disruptions during the construction phase.

The hearing followed a virtual public session earlier this year in February, where participants were able to submit their questions and comments remotely.
