UPDATE: suspect identified in Police-involved shooting under investigation in Milton

MILTON, Del. – An investigation is underway following an officer involved shooting in Milton Thursday afternoon.

According to police, the incident took place shortly before 4 p.m. Troopers were initially called to Lewes-Georgetown Highway near Harbeson Road for reports of a possible impaired driver. Dispatchers told troopers that a red Ford F-150 was seen driving at a slow speed, swerving into the opposite lane of travel, and driving on the shoulder. Troopers found the vehicle on Coolspring Road near Fisher Road and tried to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver failed to stop and instead led police on a chase. The vehicle eventually stopped in a driveway in the 28000 block of West Springside Drive, at which time the suspected allegedly got out of the vehicle with a knife and ran into a nearby home that he did not live in. He then left the home with the knife, and troopers gave repeated verbal commands for him to drop the weapon, but the suspect continued to advance toward the troopers.

Both troopers subsequently discharged their divisional issued handguns, hitting the suspect.

The 44-year-old male suspect from Milford was pronounced dead at the scene.

Per DSP standard operating procedures, the involved troopers have been placed on administrative leave pending a use of force investigation, in conjunction with the Delaware Department of Justice.

UPDATE: Delaware State Police has identified 44-year-old Gregory Painter as the deceased in the shooting.
