PFLAG Salisbury speaks out on crosswalk repainting decision
SALISBURY, Md. – PFLAG Salisbury is speaking out after Mayor Randy Taylor announced that the Pride crosswalk downtown will be repainted.
The organization released a lengthy statement on Facebook Tuesday morning, saying in part, “We firmly believe that we have consistently acted in good faith in our interactions with Mayor Taylor and were hopeful following several meetings held in the late summer and early fall that positive progress had been made. Accordingly, we are exceedingly disappointed by the announcement made yesterday and want to make it abundantly clear that no amount of paint will ever be able to obliterate our existence or our dedication to inclusivity.”
PFLAG will hold a peaceful conversation at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at 115 S. Division Street, in front of the City of Salisbury Headquarters. They emphasized that this is not a protest, and expressions of hate and vitriol are strongly discouraged.
“Diversity is one of our most significant community assets, and public art enlivens and enriches community spaces. Our ask is simple: we would like Maryland’s first rainbow and trans pride crosswalks preserved and to see the crosswalk initiative expanded with other civic and cultural groups coming forward with similar proposals.”
