Lending a Hand: La Red Health Providing Resources

GEORGETOWN, Del. – Hundreds are out in Georgetown as the La Red Health Center and dozens of their partners are lending a hand for their Spring Resource Fair.
La Red Behavioral Health Administrator, John Russum explains the challenges members of his community face trying to connect with health care services.
Russum tells us, “Sussex County is a very big county. It’s very rural. So we’re trying to put everything in one place, very easy to get to here in Georgetown. So that everyone can see what we have to offer them, because I think there’s a lot of our community, our patients that don’t know what’s out there for them.”
From aspects like a healthy diet, to combating more serious issues like addiction and mental health, they wanted to offer something up for everyone.
For young mother, Esther Salazar it’s a relief to have them all in one place.
“I found it very helpful. So far, I found a lot of researches thanks to La Red. I have found a lot of help with my baby like if I need diapers, baby wipes. It’s very, very helpful. Very educational as well,” says Salazar.
Connecting residents with resources they may not know about has been a big part of La Red holding these Resource Fairs over the last five years.
“And the reason that I’m here is because a lot of the programs, people don’t know that they exist and there’s programs that are needed in the community and it’s free of cost. And we take the barriers out…” says Mary-Joe Vasquez from Delaware’s Trauma Response.
While Russum says, “We want to make it friendly to everybody. We have music playing. You know, we everyone to feel comfortable here and get the help they need.”
Russum tells us the number of partners they’ve gotten involved with the Resource Fair is a major increase from around 15 to 20 partners when they first started.
