Georgetown Boys and Girls Club seeking funding for new facility

GEORGETOWN, Del.- Wednesday, U.S. Representative Sarah McBride toured the Boys and Girls Club facility, that has been welcoming in Sussex County youth since 2004.

The organization submitted a $6 million federal funding proposal to build a brand new 28,000 square foot facility. McBride said the new building would better serve the community that depends on the club.

“The investment here in a new Boys and Girls Club in Georgetown is an investment in Sussex County kids,” said McBride. “It’s an investment in Sussex County’s parents and grandparents; it’s an investment in opportunity for these young people, but it’s also an investment in public safety.”

Club director, Rene Hickman said the staff offers more than just a place for youth to go after school.

“The parents can trust that they’re going to be able to be at work and they’re going to be comfortable knowing their kid has a space after school to be able to get that additional support with their homework, to be able to have fun, to be able to interact with their friends,” said Hickman.

Which is why Hickman believes the need for a new location is so great, especially with the growing Sussex County population.

“I want to believe in the dreams that those students are having. I had dreams, and I sit here now fulfilling those dreams, and I want the rest of our community and our world to understand that they really are our future,” said Hickman.
