Cape boy’s lacrosse falls to Salesianum in DIAA Championship
CAMDEN, Del. – Cape boy’s lacrosse fell to Salesianum 12-9 in a tightly contested DIAA Championship on Saturday at Riders Stadium.
The game opened with stout defense, with the first goal coming from Salesianum over eight minutes into the first quarter. Cape would finish the first period strong, taking a 3-1 lead into the second quarter. The Vikings built their lead to 5-1, before eventually taking an 8-4 lead into halftime, thanks in part to an acrobatic handle and finish from Burke Healy with less than a second to play.
Sallies would steal the moment to start the second half, though, scoring four unanswered goals to knot the game at 8-8 heading into the fourth quarter.
Salesianum took the lead just over a minute into the final period of play, with the Vikings answering less than a minute later to tie the game at 9-9 with 10 minutes to play. The goal that proved to be the difference in the DIAA Championship was scored by Sallies’ Luca Pompeii on a fast break with 5:44 remaining. Salesianum would manage to salt away the remaining clock and firm their grasp on the state title with an empty-net goal in the final minute of the game.
Salesianum boy’s lacrosse has now won five consecutive DIAA Championships since Cape last dethroned them in the 2019 season.
