Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office looking to protect the roadways with enhanced safety measures

WICOMICO COUNTY, Md. – Police in Wicomico County continue looking at the biggest issues so far this year, and how they plan to address them. Captain Richard Wiersberg, of the Wicomico Sheriff’s Office, prioritizes visibility.

“We try to be as proactive as we can in the community by patrolling and doing active speed enforcement. As much visibility we can have to deter crime is what we’re actively doing.”

The Sheriff’s Office is looking to continue strides of success in 2025. According to officers, assaults, carjackings, and neighbor disputes have been consistent. However, Wiersberg wishes the department could approach the dirt bike initiative more aggressively, but claims the state of Maryland is holding them back.

“I wish it was easy and we could just knock these young men and women off their dirt bikes, but we can’t, and we have the state of Maryland who is tying our hands in how aggressive we can go after them, but that is our biggest complaint in the community.”

The department is focused on unsafe driving measures, and it’s more than just bikes and ATVs. “Speeding enforcement in Wicomico County is probably our number one complaint, not just because of ATVs and dirt bikes. Every community has a street that everybody likes to speed on.”

The Sheriff’s Office will continue efforts for the remainder of 2025. “We’ve recently received 3 speed trailers that we put up throughout the county at different times. One right now is active on Riverside Drive, so if someone is speeding, it flashes and lets them know to slow down.”
