Wicomico Co. Exec. clears up Wetipquin State Park rumors

WICOMICO COUNTY, Md. – Wicomico County Executive, Julie Giordano is squashing rumors that the county is behind the plans for the new Wetipquin State Park.
The community started talking after Maryland Governor Wes Moore congratulated the county on the new state park.
That was at the Board of Public Works Meeting, earlier this year. But Giordano wants to clarify the county did not acquire the state park. Now, she’s trying to set the record straight.
“I think the misconception is that the county was well aware of what was going on, we were hiding things, not being transparent, and that is not the case at all,” said Giordano.
“We found out for certain at the Eastern Shore Delegation Meeting in January. February is the Board of Public Works, that is not a time to sit there and argue with the Governor,” she added. “It was, ‘Hey, thank you so much. Thank you for your support, thank you for being a leader in this. But I had nothing to do with this purchase at all.”
Giordano said she now wants to pull the Department of Natural Resources in on the conversation.
“My hope is that we can have a town hall, get DNR down here and try to tell people, ‘Listen, the county didn’t have anything to down with the transaction, we chose this property. Yes, the county showed us other properties, we were not interested. We were very interested in this piece of property, with the house on there and everything, and this is what our intentions are,” said Giordano.
Giordano said that town hall date is to be determined.
