Students create Pinwheel Garden in honor of Child Abuse Awareness

SNOW HILL, Md. – April is child abuse prevention month and in Snow Hill, middle schoolers are showing their support.

Blue is worn to show solidarity with those who have suffered or are suffering from child abuse. The month acts to make the public aware this is a serious issue, as well as s space to encourage those suffering to speak out.
Community School Liaison for Snow Hill middle, Dr. Melarie Brown says students need safe spaces. “The purpose of it, and what we wanted, was to highlight that kids are struggling with things at home, and that our communities are facing those struggles and to also provide resources outside the front of the school. We have coloring books available for students, we have pamphlets available, and we have also been working with the child advocacy center.”
Students created a pinwheel garden to symbolize their support for victims. Two groups, Students against Destructive Decisions or SADD and Students Advocating for School Safety or SASS, helped organize this event.
Jackson Height in in the eighth grade, and a member of SADD. “It kind of shows that if you’re going through something like that, you’re not alone. that you can talk to somebody.”
8th grader Thomas Gordon is also a member. “Personally, I don’t know anybody that’s been abused by a parent, or anybody that’s going through child abuse. But I genuinely do feel for them, and I do want to say we can help you.”
