Street sign replacement project in the works for Crisfield

CRISFIELD, Md. – The City of Crisfield is moving forward with a street sign replacement project after a member of the Public Works Department noticed many were deteriorating.

“You don’t want somebody that doesn’t have a telephone or a way to do it quick to be lost, that’s very frustrating and that’s why I think it’s important that we get it up there quick,” said Brian Fowler, Crisfield Public Works Director.

The city of Crisfield Public Works Department hopes to work quickly in getting new street signs up and available to the public.

Fowler has been in his position since January and says he noticed the problem when out doing routine maintenance.

“I was doing some pothole evaluations throughout the city and I come across this street that I was going to write down, and when I went to write it down, there wasn’t a street sign in either end of the street so I had to actually Google map where I was and that’s when I realized we needed to move the sign priority up on the list,” said Fowler.

Many streets signs are old, rusting and faded, making it an issue for first responders.

“If they don’t know exactly where something is, like seconds and minutes could matter,” said Fowler.

The street sign replacement project was approved at the last city council meeting and is expected to cost just under $4,000.

“We’re changing out about 60 signs, some that are missing, some that are just faded or damaged, it’s important for first responders to be able to find streets in a hurry and for tourists when they come into town,” said Fowler.

Fowler hopes to have the new signs up and in place by Memorial Day.
