Senator Johnny Mautz pushes against solar energy projects on the Eastern Shore

MARYLAND. – Solar energy continues to be a problem for residents on the Eastern Shore, according to Republican lawmakers. After the General Assembly, the potential furtherance of offshore winds projects has become more certain.

Senate Bill 931, also known as the “Renewable Energy Certainty Act,” allows the Public Service Commission to approve projects and override zoning decisions.

Lawmakers from the Eastern Shore Delegation believe the projects would ultimately devastate farmland and agriculture. However, many Democratic lawmakers believe these projects will be a solution to rising energy costs.

State Senator Johnny Mautz said he will continue to advocate for the shore. “The Eastern Shore is a ripe target for solar investors, and that goes into conflict with agriculture. There are several things we’re leaving session with that are going to be problematic for the Eastern Shore.”

The bill passed through both chambers and awaiting Governor Wes Moore’s signature.
