Ocean City Elementary School students celebrate Arbor Day
OCEAN CITY, Md. – Ocean City Elementary School students celebrated Arbor Day alongside town officials. Mayor Rick Meehan said this tradition is part of keeping the area beautiful. “Ocean City has been declared a tree city USA, and that’s because of what our beautification and park and recreation department does to beautify Ocean City.”
Arbor Day – organized by the Ocean City Beautification Committee, partnering with the students at OCES to bring green to the community. The Mayor and City Council, with the help of students, planted the tree. The symbolic move was part of the TreeMendous Program.
Committee member Donna Greenwood loves engaging in the event. “Children organize little skits, poems, and sing for us. They do a wonderful celebration.”
Following the tree planting, students enjoyed demonstrations by the Ocean City Police Department and their K-9 units. Senator Mary Beth Carozza, a state senator, attended the school ceremony and cherishes the chance to reconnect.
“And to think all these years later, these traditions are continuing and involving students. Actually, to have the students performing for us, and coming out and planting trees with them, and then they taught me the Arbor Day song. It’s just a wonderful tradition.”
Mayor Meehan sees the value of tradition for the community. “We can come out and plant that first tree, and you can see by the excitement all the kids really enjoy this. And it’s great to learn more about trees, and I think it’s great for our community.”
