New dog licensing program aims to simplify process for Delaware pet owners

DELAWARE – All dogs in the State of Delaware six months and older must be registered and have a valid license.

This legal requirement aims to help ensure public safety and the safety of your pup.

“If an animal control officer is called and we pick up your dog, we don’t have to impound it at the shelter. The owner doesn’t have to go through all the stress of worry of trying to find their dog. We will bring it back to you,” says Christina Motoyoshi, Director of the Delaware Office of Animal Welfare.

Aside from the legal requirement of licensing, Motoyoshi says it helps protect your pets, family, and the community against disease. She adds that it’s one of the best things you can do for your pet.

“Everyone thinks it can’t happen to them, their dog won’t slip out the door or get out of a gate that someone left open. This will help give peace of mind and help that dog get back home to you quickly.”

The process is now easier than ever, thanks to Delaware’s new partnership with DocuPet. If your dog is already licensed, Motoyoshi says you will be sent a renewal notice when the time comes. If you have a new pup, there are multiple ways to obtain a license for them. The easiest way is to go online, create a profile for your pup, and upload the required rabies vaccination certificate.

If you don’t have internet access or would rather not do it online, you have the option to call or do it by mail.

“The primary thing is you dog will get home to you much quicker if your dog has a dog license.”
