New community mural finds home on Newton St.

SALISBURY, Md. – On Newton Street, there’s a new mural in town.

In front of the Newton Community Center sits a hexagon grid, filled with flowers and bees. It’s the street’s latest addition, but it’s not just something nice to look at.

Salisbury University student, Kailah Caliskan, who helped bring the mural to life, said it’ll also help kids pass between the community center and the neighboring park, safely.

“You don’t necessarily know that this is an area where kids are going to be darting back and forth, but with research from Bloomberg Philanthropies, an, as we’ve seen with our neighbors, this will call attention to the street, and drivers will break their monotony,” said Caliskan.

Dozens of locals got their hands dirty and played a part in bringing the project to life. Salisbury community relations manager, Rachel Manning said the mural now serves as a representation of the city, A Place to Grow.

“We’re just thrilled that it all came together,” said Manning. “The community was involved, Salisbury University was involved, and everybody was able to work together to make it happen.”

And this wasn’t a one-off project. Caliskan is already drawing up plans to help other communities bring art to their areas as well.

“One of our stretch goals is to create not only necessarily another mural, but legislation for other people to create safety calming [art], things like that,” said Caliskan.
