Mardela holds off Delmar in cross-state battle
DELMAR, Del. – Mardela softball bested Delmar 3-1 on Thursday.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the third inning, when Mardela scored a trio of runs with RBIs from Julia Wisk, Ava Twilley, and Ella Twilley to take a 3-0 lead.
Delmar responded in the bottom of the fifth with a run brought in by a Jordyn Hollamon single.
There was no more scoring in the game as Mardela’s starting pitcher Ava Twilley shut the door on the Wildcats, finishing with 18 strikeouts and one run allowed in seven innings.
After the game, Mardela Head Coach Kory Shiles said, “Big time game. We knew it was going to be a close, low-scoring game coming in, that’s at least that’s the feeling we had. And, we had a big three-run inning early, and Ava led the way with 18 strikeouts today. She was phenomenal, had all her pitches working against a really good team. So, great team effort. I’m really proud of the team for overcoming adversity.”
