Man convicted, sentenced for vehicular homicide in fatal hit-and-run crash involving construction worker
SALISBURY, Md. – A Marion Station man has been convicted and sentenced for hitting and killing a construction worker last March.
On March 27, 2024, 28-year-old Jamal Scarborough was driving southbound on Airport Road, in an area where traffic was reduced to one lane to accommodate a highway work crew. A flagger at the scene was using a signal flag to instruct Scarborough to stop to allow vehicles traveling northbound on Airport Road to pass. Scarborough intentionally avoided these instructions and drove into the active work zone, running over the victim who was working in a ditch on the right side of the road. Two law enforcement officers witnessed the incident and tried to stop Scarborough, but he fled and led police on a five mile, ten minute chase before driving into a field, subsequently disabling his car.
The victim later died as a result of his injuries.
Scarborough did not have an active driver’s license at the time of the incident.
Last week, Scarborough pleaded guilty to grossly negligent vehicular manslaughter, failing to stop at an accident scene involving death, and fleeing and eluding police. He was subsequently sentenced to 20 years behind bars with no part of the sentence suspended, meaning he will spend all 20 years in prison.
