Lawmakers on the Eastern Shore took part in Legislative Wrap-Up at Wicomico Civic Center

MARYLAND. – Lawmakers gathered in Wicomcio County today to wrap up the recently finished legislative session. They spoke about this year’s reflections on a myriad of topics like energy, education, and the state budget. Despite anticipated challenges, they remain excited about Maryland’s future.

District 37A, Delegate Sheree Sample Hughes, believes the event allowed community members to get an understanding of Maryland’s current economic situation.

“I think it’s important, because we had every industry at the table. We had the education community, agriculture community, business community, and various businesses we don’t hear from.”

The 447th session of the Maryland General Assembly had lawmakers contemplating issues this year. Eastern Shore officials got together for annual legislative wrap to engage the community after a stressful session. Hughes said it gives residents a clearer picture.  “It gives everyone a broader perspective, not only in their specific area, but how it all comes together.”

For Delegate Barry Beauchamp of District 38B – who was in his first session – and wrap up. He said he spent his first 90 days advocating for much of the Eastern Shore. Beauchamp is a local business owner, and he aimed to make the state more attractive to businesses.

“We were at 8.25% in corporate tax, that was our rate, and it was lowered to 7.99%, and that is not large enough to incentivize corporations to come here.”

He emphasizes that officials must enhance the state’s competitiveness with neighboring states. He believes, though, it can only happen if officials work together. “A rising tide raises all ships, if we can actually get more businesses to Maryland, it would certainly improve our economy here.”

Delegate Sample Hughes though remains optimistic about the state and Eastern Shore. “I would encourage people to continually be engaged. I don’t think after 90 days the work ends, the work continues, trust me.”

Other lawmakers were pleased with House Bill 1222 passing legislation. The bill allows Sheriffs and law enforcement to work in coordination with the Federal Government in immigration enforcement.

On May 7th, the Wicomico County Board of Education and Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce will present a report on the state of the schools.

Lawmakers hold the belief that a special session will be convened to address the 2026 fiscal year budget.
