Groups are hoping for Governor Matt Meyer to give an 8% funding increase for early childcare

DELAWARE. – The Delaware Association for the Education of Young Children are remaining cautious ahead of the state budget’s finalization.

The association wants lawmakers to prioritize early childhood education. They are calling for an 8% funding increase.

The organization said the money would help provide equitable access to early learning.

Officials are happy to hear Governor Matt Meyer mention investing in childcare education in the state of the state address.

“We’re definitely more encouraged and confident following the state of the state, that Governor Meyer will prioritize early child education in the budget. But unless there’s funding to match his remarks, then it will be clear that other priorities continue to outweigh Delaware’s youngest learners, and that would be a shame.”

Governor Matt Meyer’s office issued a statement that he understands the importance of early childhood education.

“Governor Meyer understands how essential childcare is for Delaware families and our state, especially as a working parent himself. High-quality childcare is critical to building an educational foundation for every child. The State of Delaware is committed to collaborating with childcare providers to ensure they have more of the resources they need to help every child succeed.”
