First State Community Action Agency hosting Fair Housing Workshop
GEORGETOWN, Del. – April is fair housing month and First State Community Action Agency plans to host a workshop to discuss just that.
The Agency is partnering with the Delaware Human and Civil Rights Commission and the Sussex County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.
At First State Community Action Agency, they believe a safe, stable home is the bedrock of a thriving community and this event is an opportunity to learn about the rights and the vital protections afforded by fair housing laws.
“We recognize that for generations discriminatory practices have created barriers in housing contributing to the wealth gap, but this event will empower these communities with information needed to recognize and challenge discriminatory practices, paving the way for greater opportunities for individuals to be able to have housing,” said Bernice Edwards, Executive Director of First State Community Action Agency.
The event will include a round table discussion featuring local experts, fair housing advocates and people who have experienced housing issues in Delaware.
Edwards said decent affordable housing is not a privilege, it’s a right.
“We want to make sure and hopefully people who are living in not only our state, but across this country have an opportunity to be able to be housed or live where they would like to live, but also making it equitable that individuals be able to afford to live where they want to,” said Edwards.
The Fair Housing Workshop will take place on April 25 from 10 am to 2 pm at First State’s Georgetown office, located at 308 North Railroad Avenue.
