Delmarva Shorebirds forced to postpone home opener due to field conditions
SALISBURY, Md. – The Delmarva Shorebirds postponed their home opener Tuesday night versus the Fayetteville Woodpeckers due to field conditions that were deemed “unsafe” for players.
Shorebirds GM Chris Bitters addressed the crowd, saying that the game would not be played due to portions of the field that had been compromised by heavy rain earlier in the week. Bitters said, “95% [of the field] is great, 5% is not safe…It’s not worth risking these guys injuring themselves and hurting their careers. I sincerely apologize. It was out of our control, the [grounds crew] worked very hard…Not the way I wanted to start the season, but you know what? I told the guys, ‘We’ve got 65 more to go.'”
Bitters assured fans that their tickets for Tuesday night’s cancelled game would “be good for two games this season.”
The team released an official statement, saying:
“Due to field conditions from the inclement weather this past weekend, Tuesday’s contest between the Delmarva Shorebirds and Fayetteville Woodpeckers has been postponed.
The game will be made up on Thursday, April 10, as a doubleheader starting at 5:35 PM. Game two will be 30 minutes following the first game’s conclusion, and each will be seven innings long.
The next scheduled game for the Shorebirds will be on Wednesday, April 9, at its regularly scheduled time of 7:05 PM with a single nine-inning game.
