April 7th marks the last day of session for lawmakers

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – It’s ‘Sine die’ in Maryland – marking the last day of session for lawmakers in the general assembly. District 37 State Senator Johnny Mautz told WMDT about what worked and didn’t during the session. Some highs include policies on commercial fishing and agriculture. And, Mautz said this is the first session that didn’t target the 2nd Amendment rights.

However, he believes there is pressure on the lower shore because of state budget issues. He said he’s also concerned about solar energy projects off the coasts. “The budget is a problem; the taxes are a problem. It’s going to make us less competitive, and Delaware is right there. It’s going to be an easier and more affordable place for businesses to do business.”

Senator Mautz believes raising taxes will ultimately harm the state. Stating that taxpayers and businesses will pay the brunt of the costs. He also remains cautious about the costs being pushed onto local governments. He thinks income taxes will make the burden too much for some residents.

“Not only is our economy slower than the other economies, we’re not growing as fast, and are linked up with the federal government. And raising taxes is not in my mind the solution for long-term economic stability.”

Lawmakers are discussing a special session to discuss the elimination or reduction of federal funding matches. Sen. Mautz said this could force lawmakers to revisit the issues in the summer to avoid a state shortfall.
