After the Whistle: Queen Anne’s Beatrice Holthaus
CENTREVILLE, Md. – For many athletes, playing just one varsity sport can be a full-time gig. For Queen Anne’s Beatrice Holthaus, one sport is only the beginning.
“You take a step back sometimes and just take it all in.”
There’s a lot to take in for Holthaus.
Only a sophomore, she’s already a varsity athlete in three separate sports: soccer, basketball, and lacrosse. “It’s a lot sometimes, but I do play basketball year round, so [I’m] pretty much always training for that. And it’s not too bad because each team is highly competitive, just looking for the next win. So it’s pretty easy,” she said.
With over half her high school career still ahead of her, Holthaus has already started bringing home some serious hardware, and in the process, has created memories that she will never forget. “Definitely winning a state championship for soccer is probably always going to stick out, and probably winning [the Bayside championship] for basketball because it’s just such a fun environment, because it’s in the big Civic Center,” she said.
Holthaus cited basketball as her main sport, the one she sees herself playing at the next level. Talking about her game on the court, she said, “I think I’m strong on defense, tall, can jump, block shots, and I think I just help bring leadership. That’s what I try to do at least…When you get [to the] collegiate level, I’m not going to be a center, so I need to work on ball handling skills.”
Holthaus was named Bayside North Player of the Year for the 2023-24 basketball season–her freshman year.
For now though, as a defender on the Queen Anne’s girl’s lacrosse team, the sophomore has her sights set on another state championship, after the 2024 lacrosse season saw the Lions claim a Bayside title but fall short in the 2A state final.
“Going all the way. That’s always the hope,” Holthaus said on her team’s expectations for the 2025 season.
