World War II 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion women honored on the Eastern Shore.

African American Accomplishments

MARYLAND – In honor of Women’s History Month, one local organization is acknowledging the accomplishments of African American women in the Military.

To celebrate, the Beach to Bay Heritage Area, the Heart of the Chesapeake Heritage Area, and the Maryland250 Commission have planned a program to honor the women from the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion from World War II.

Beach to Bay Heritage Area’s Executive Director Lisa Challenger says many may not know the connections at least some of these women have to the Eastern Shore.

“Some of the women from the 6888 were from all over the Lower shore, including Cambridge. So, we partnered the Heart of the Chesapeake heritage area and our heritage area and really making this a story about women’s history, and to celebrate Maryland’s 250th anniversary coming up this year.”

The event took place, on Wednesday, March 19 at the Charles Chipman Culture Center. For more information on Beach to Bay Heritage Area visit their website.
